Region: Burgenland
Viticulture: Biodynamic Farming / Natural Wine
Grapes: Grüner Veltliner, Weissburgunder and other local varieties (field blend).
Vinification: A blend of two contrasting vintages. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and aged in large, old wooden barrels. Bottled with minimal intervention.
Tasting note and best served with: A beautifully expressive, textured white with layers of citrus, orchard fruit and savoury herbal notes. One vintage brings a little natural richness and softness, while the younger wine adds freshness, energy and a lovely saline edge. A brilliant balance of juicy fruit and mineral tension. Serve lightly chilled alongside roast chicken, grilled fish or a selection of good cheeses.
Producer and terroir information: Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe have been making some of Austria's most exciting natural wines at Gut Oggau since 2007. Working biodynamically in Burgenland, they focus on expressing the individual character of their vineyards with minimal intervention. The Maskerade range comes from recently acquired vineyards that are still developing their own identity and transitioning towards full biodynamic certification. These wines capture a snapshot of that journey, making each release a little different.
