Vinification
A seriously characterful Beaujolais from Frédéric Cossard, made from Gamay grown on a 50-year-old parcel in the renowned Côte du Py vineyard. The vines grow on weathered granite soils, bringing a distinctive mineral edge to the wine.
The grapes are fermented as whole bunches for around two weeks before a short period of ageing in concrete egg tanks. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled unfined and unfiltered, with no added sulphites, this is a low-intervention take on Morgon that puts purity of fruit and terroir front and centre.
Tasting note and best served with:
Bright and energetic, with tart red cherries, raspberries and wild berries, alongside gentle spice, floral notes and a deeper, earthy mineral character. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with fine tannins and a lovely balance of juicy fruit and savoury complexity. Bottled young, it can show a slight natural spritz, adding to its lively character.
This is Gamay with a little more depth and structure than your classic gluggable Beaujolais, while retaining plenty of freshness and drinkability.
It's no added sulphur so don't leave it opened overnight.
Producer and terroir information:
Frédéric Cossard is a leading figure in the natural wine scene, known for producing expressive, minimal-intervention wines across Burgundy and beyond. Originally establishing Domaine de Chassorney in 1996, he built a reputation for championing organic farming and wines that capture the character of their vineyard sites without unnecessary cellar intervention.
His négociant project works closely with growers to source high-quality fruit, applying the same meticulous approach to vineyard management and winemaking. Cossard has also moved away from conventional oak ageing in many of his wines, favouring alternatives such as concrete eggs to preserve freshness and aromatic purity.
Côte du Py is one of Morgon's most celebrated vineyard sites, known for producing Gamay with greater structure, depth and mineral character. This 2021 bottling combines the site's distinctive terroir with Cossard's signature light touch, resulting in a vibrant, finely textured red with serious character and plenty of charm.
